The deal of the decade is set to bring UK investment, fibre and 5G infrastructure expansion and customer choice. Virgin Media O2 launches today with a promise to power the nation's recovery and create unbeatable choice for UK consumers and businesses.

The One Point already works closely with O2 - the nation's favourite and biggest Mobile network - and Virgin - the nation's fastest connectivity network. So we are very excited about the new opportunities this will provide our customers.

Representing the biggest UK merger in a decade and the largest UK telecoms deal ever, the new joint venture between Liberty Global and Telefonica opens at a time when connectivity has never been more critical and as the UK recovers and rebuilds from the global pandemic. Today, new CEO Lutz Schuler sets out a vision to 'upgrade the UK' through investment in fibre and 5G infrastructure, innovation, and a seamless mix of the best products and services in the market.

The new business becomes one of the UK's largest, with 47 million connections across broadband, mobile, TV and home phone, and offers connectivity services, applications and digital solutions to tens of thousands of UK businesses and public sector organisations. It employs around 18,000 people and reported equivalent revenues of £11bn last year.

What's happening?

On 20 May the UK Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) approved the merger of Virgin Media and O2.

This is a joint venture between Liberty Global and Telefonica.

From 1 June, these 2 providers will join forces.

What does this mean for The One Point customers?

We're really excited about the merger with Virgin Media, but it does not directly affect customers of The One Point, you will continue to be served in the normal way - no change.

However, some things to look forward to include lightning-fast fibre and epic 5G coverage, which means the merger can only mean better connectivity for our customers. It'll also bring customers more choice and value, and will challenge our industry to do better.

Through O2 and Virgin Media, we'll help to supercharge business big and small as the country gets back on its feet.

Founder & CEO of The One Point, Martin Lauer, said:

"This is a really exciting time for the telecoms industry and connectivity in the UK, and we're delighted to be working alongside the two powerhouses that are making this happen. This past year has shown us all the importance connectivity plays in both our professional and personal lives, so this merger is a step in the right direction to ensure the UK is at the forefront of connectivity. The One Point customers get only the best from us, right down to the partners we work with. It’s only up from here."

Speaking at the launch of the new company, Lutz Schuler, CEO of Virgin Media O2, said:

"With the fastest broadband and most reliable mobile network in the UK today, Virgin Media O2 is the complete package."

"We are ready to shake up the market and be the competitor the country needs at a time when choice has never been more important. Through investment and innovation in cutting-edge infrastructure and future technology, we will connect more people to the things they love, support communities across the country, help businesses to grow, and power the UK economy."

"With no limit to our ambition, we're here to upgrade the UK - our mission starts today. - Lutz Schuler, CEO of Virgin Media O2"
