Fake login page blog

Your login credentials are just as valuable as your bank account information. Access to your private accounts can reveal personal information that cybercriminals can use to craft highly personalised phishing attacks to target you, your organisation, or your family. Gaining access to your accounts allows cybercriminals to sell your stolen credentials to other criminals.

How do they steal your login details?

A common tactic for stealing login details involves creating fake login pages. These scams typically begin with a phishing email urging you to click a link to “log in to your account”. The email will appear legitimate and make a reasonable request. However, the link takes you to a counterfeit login page that mimics the genuine site. You provide the attacker with private credentials by entering your email and password on the fake page. You are often redirected to the actual website, leaving you unaware that your credentials have been stolen.

How to spot a fake login page?

To protect yourself from fake pages, it is good practice to go directly to the login page by typing the website address into your browser or saving it as a bookmark instead of relying on links within emails.

Additionally, consider these tips to identify fake web pages:

-          Check the web address – Ensure the website begins with https:// before entering personal information.

-          Verify the Domain Name – Look closely for misspellings or slight variations that mimic legitimate brands or companies.

-          Examine Grammar and Spelling – Poor grammar, punctuation, and spelling can indicate a hastily created unprofessional website.

-          Confirm Contact Information – If in doubt, use a reliable contact method to verify the email’s legitimacy directly with the company or brand.

-          Avoid unrealistic deals – Be cautious of heavily discounted items, especially the latest models. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Following these steps will help you avoid phishing schemes and further safeguard your credentials.
