Yesterday Kingston Communications announced a new cut price £4.99 daytime broadband package specially designed for the jobless. This service offers normal broadband services during the day and a dial up service in the evenings. Whilst various websites, competitors and bloggers have been quick to denounce this offer as still being expensive due to the telephone line bundling of broadband services I would like to congratulate them for at least acting. I know from experience that being made redundant during normal economic conditions is bad enough but to not be online during a recession further stresses the position. Kingston are clearly selling on the spare daytime capacity cheaply when the employed will have access at work.
My view is that broadband access should be a basic human right, a right similar to sewerage, clean running water and power. Kingston have at least done something to deal with the issue. Having broadband allows for services to be purchased at better rates, children to have access to online resources and gives adults the opportunity to search and apply for jobs - this is exactly why we, as Hull Broadband, are working on a number of Social Inclusion Projects (SIP’s) aimed at closing the gap between the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’, reversing a vicious circle into a virtuous one.
