106.9FM WHCR scoops top award!

Well done to the WHCR team - another reason to be proud of the media output from Hull!  It has just been annnounced that West Hull’s community radio station, 106.9FM WHCR, has won the Nations and Regions Award for Radio Station of the Year for Yorkshire (stations with a potential audience of under 300,000 adults).

The award was presented by the Chief Executive of the Radio Academy, Trevor Dann, during a meeting of radio stations in Yorkshire held at the studios of BBC Radio Sheffield on Monday night.

The Radio Academy Judges said about the station:

“The winner’s submission contained examples of impressive live coverage of many local events, demonstrating an enthusiasm and passion for their locality.   Natural sounding voices, good quality live output and a wide range of events were covered.   They showcased what has obviously been a very busy year for this community station and its volunteers.   They demonstrated a clear connection, sometimes on a very personal level, with their audience.”

John Harding, Managing Director of 106.9 FM WHCR was very surprised when it was announced that the station had won:

“All the team at 106.9FM WHCR put a lot of time and effort into providing a local radio service for the West Hull community – we are the only radio station that can put West Hull first and we do that every day.  The station has continually developed its output since first going on the air in March 2007 and we’re always looking for new ways to help local people and organisations promote the great work that is going on in the area to an ever growing number of listeners.  It’s fantastic that the team has been recognised by the Radio Academy in this way.”

Trevor Dann, Chief Executive of the Radio Academy said:

“The judges said that 106.9FM WHCR is particularly good for being at live events and I think that that’s got to be good for the future of radio.  The one thing radio is about is contacting and interacting with an audience and the guys at 106.9FM WHCR are clearly doing that and that’s why they’ve won this award and I hope they’ll go on and win the Sony Radio Academy National award … why not?”

The One Point partnered with WHCR earlier this year to take their media output online!
